However, for recreational diving to the maximum recreational limits (a depth of 40 meters or 130 feet), a watch with the rating of 200 meters would be considered a good starting point. What Does Water Resistance Mean on a Watch?
Watchmakers measure water resistance using three primary units: meters (m), feet (ft), atmospheres (atm), or bar.
- 1 ATM / Bar = The pressure exerted by the atmospheric environment at sea level.
- 10 meters = The pressure generated is about 1 ATM (1 bar).
- 20 ATM / 20 Bar = 200 meters.
- 60 ATM / 60 Bar = 600 meters.
Laboratory pressure tests submerge a watch in a pressurized chamber filled with water or air. The testing machine increases static pressure to match the target depth.
The myth goes that if you swim or wave your hands around under water, it creates a tremendous dynamic pressure, which forces the water inside a 100-meter watch in shallow waters. In fact, waving your hands will only create less than 0.1 bar of dynamic pressure. Watches stop working under water because of deteriorated rubber O-rings, dynamic thermal shock from entering the cold water, or faulty crown seals.

Is a 100m Water-Resistant Watch Good Enough for Diving?
The 100-meter watch serves its purpose in lap swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and surfing activities. Nevertheless, ordinary 100-meter timepieces do not cater to compressed air diving activities.
Ordinary 100-meter watches do not have a screw-down crown, dynamic seal tests, and the rigidity needed under pressure caused by constant depths. In the absence of a screw-down crown, there is a possibility of trapping the crown on equipment or pulling out the crown while diving, leading to immediate flooding of the watch mechanism.
Is 200m Water Resistance Enough for Scuba Diving?
Yes. The 200-meter watch is perfectly able to withstand all necessary pressures during recreational scuba diving. As per the standards set by PADI, the limits of recreational scuba diving do not go beyond 40 meters (130 feet). A 200m watch comes with a 5x safety margin.
If designed as a diver's watch for a certified diver, a 200-meter timepiece is one that contains strong rubber seals, a screw-down crown, a screw-down case back, and a thick crystal.
What Does 300m Water Resistance Add?

Why Do Some Dive Watches Have 600m Water Resistance?
Creating watches that go up to 600 meters (60 ATM / 2,000 feet) is not a trivial task in terms of construction. Water at 600 meters creates around 850 pounds of pressure per square inch on the watch casing.
The creation of watches rated for 600 meters is aimed at developing an absolutely robust timepiece, and not because people dive to depths of 2,000 feet often enough.

Can You Actually Dive 600m With a 600m Dive Watch?
No scuba diver can dive down to 600 meters using scuba equipment. The deepest recorded dive on a scuba is 332 meters (1,090 feet), achieved by Ahmed Gabr in 2014. Commercial saturation divers can work even deeper in hyperbaric chambers and diving bells and can dive to approximately 534 meters in open-water saturation dives.

What Is ISO 6425 and Why Does It Matter?
ISO 6425 is the international standard established by the International Organization for Standardization specifying what qualifies as an authentic diver’s watch.
The requirements for ISO 6425 accreditation or use of the “Diver’s” designation on the face include:
- Overpressure Testing: It has to be able to resist 125% of its depth rating (a diver's watch rated for 200 meters is tested to 250 meters of water pressure).
- Thermal Shock Resistance: Plunged in water at temperatures of 5°C, 40°C, and 5°C successively.
- Condensation Resistance Test: Placed in a heated condition and then put on a cold plate to check that no condensation is formed internally.
- Magnetic Resistance: Tests carried out using a magnetic field under ISO 764 norms.
- Shock Resistance: Tested under ISO 1413 norms for mechanical shock resistance.
- Saltwater Resistance: Tested under salt solution of 3% sodium chloride for 24 hours for corrosion resistance.
- Unidirectional Bezel: It has to have a unidirectional rotating bezel with an elapsed-time scale and minute markers.
- Legibility Under Darkness: It should still be legible at a 25 cm distance in darkness.
Standard water-resistant watches are batch-tested in dry air. A true diver's watch undergoes individual wet pressure testing before leaving the assembly line.
Water Resistance Is Not the Only Dive-Watch Specification That Matters
A deep water-resistance rating means little if the rest of the watch fails underwater. Essential dive watch features include the following:
- Screw-Down Crown: Crown pipes that are threaded and contain an O-ring within them ensure that the crown does not extend accidentally underwater.
